The golden eagle's swan song. introductionthe jeep wrangler carries over for 2006 and dealers will likely be selling them down as they prepare for an all-new 2007 model. for 2006, jeep has added more heavy-duty equipment to the base unlimited model. An extended-wheelbase version introduced mid-2004, the wrangler unlimited models are designed to offer more room for people and cargo and improved handling and ride quality on the pavement while maintaining most of the shorter wrangler's legendary off-road capability. for 2006, jeep has brought back the golden eagle package from the 1970s. Built with jeep's 'go anywhere, do anything' design philosophy, the rubicon is a 4x4 gem. in any form, wrangler remains an icon, a symbol of go-anywhere adventure. And it is not be the best choice for someone drawn to it simply because it's cute. (and it is cute.) getting in and out is awkward. The interior is spartan. The se is a basic machine, with a padded roll bar, steel half-doors with side curtains, soft folding top, tilt steering column, a mini-console with two cupholders, skid plates for the fuel tank and transfer case, gas-charged shock absorbers, and p215/75r15 goodyear wrangler all-terrain tires on 15 x 7-inch steel wheels. The 2006 unlimited rubicon remains essentially a stretch-wheelbase version of the standard rubicon. all wranglers come with a fold-down windshield, removable doors and top, and a weatherproof interior. The hard top comes with roll-up windows, a rear wiper-washer and rear defroster. A wide variety of appearance items and accessories are also available, particularly at the upper trim levels. walkaroundthe jeep wrangler is one of the most widely recognized vehicles in the world. Its round headlights, jailhouse grille, and square-edged fenders hark back to the 1940 original. the exterior mirrors are made of plastic, which jeep engineers say holds up better than metal when going off-road. Bumpers are black on all models. Fender flares are black or dark khaki on all but rubicon and rubicon unlimited, where they are metallic gray. other visual cues distinguish the rubicons as well. A 22-inch rubicon nameplate is emblazoned on either side of the hood. Heavy-gauge diamond-plate sill guards are bolted to the body sides to protect the rocker panels from damage and dings from rocks and stumps in the backcountry. Goodyear wrangler 31-inch tires are mounted on 16-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels with dished faces to protect them from debris and obstacles. Generous ground clearance helps the rubicon traverse the trail. one of the biggest decisions to make when buying a wrangler is selecting the top. Purists prefer the soft top, a high-quality piece of equipment that can be configured according to the weather. Doors may be removed for the maximum open-air experience. The hard top comes with full-height doors and roll-up windows. Rearward visibility is better, and it's further aided by the rear-window defroster, wiper and washer. Wind noise is greatly reduced. The hard top can be removed, although we haven't tried this. Jeep claims that either top is far easier to remove or install than those of pre-2001 models and provides much better sealing from the elements. the additional length of the unlimited models is almost entirely between the door and the rear wheel. How this affects the wranglers rugged-cute look will be a matter of taste. We like how the stretch in length, combined with the fractionally lower sunrider top, gives the wrangler more car-like proportions; but jeep die-hards may hate it for precisely that reason. interiorgetting into a jeep wrangler requires a tall step up. (side steps are optional on some models, but full running boards are not available as they'd be vulnerable on rough trails.) once inside, the cabin is spartan but highly functional. seats and fabrics are comfortable. The easily removable, fold-and-tumble rear seat is equipped with the latch (lower anchors and upper tethers for children) system for mounting child safety seats directly to the structure of the seat. On all models, the interior is weatherproofed, and can be cleaned with a hose, thanks to drain plugs in the floor. The interior light continues to be managed by a switch in the door frame, so a fuse must be pulled to extinguish the light when the wrangler is operated sans doors. the wrangler remains miles away from luxurious, but the current generation models are more comfortable than older generations. The mirror automatically dims when headlights shine on it; this bit of luxury technology may sound out of place in a wrangler, but it's an important feature when the top is off. 2012 jeep wrangler review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New v6 and 5-speed automatic improve streetability. introductionthe 2012 jeep wrangler is a game-changer because of its new powertrain that moves jeep out of the dark ages. It's the pentastar v6, new last year to chrysler, named one of ward's 10 best engines for 2011. The new engine makes considerably more power with slightly better fuel mileage, an epa-estimated 17 city/21 highway mpg. It's smaller, lighter, and more advanced than the engine it replaces. a smooth new 5-speed automatic transmission for 2012 replaces last year's inadequate 4-speed. The transmission is well behaved and doesn't hunt for gears. It was designed for use with chrysler's 5. 7-liter hemi engine, so it maintains jeep-like industrial strength. The pentastar block was designed to have accessories bolted to it, to reduce vibration. This pays off with a smooth and silent interior, even at 80 mph in the hardtop wrangler. The wrangler unlimited corners well. The wrangler unlimited is built on a wheelbase that's 21 inches longer than that of the regular wrangler. the soft top that comes standard slides and folds horizontally on the roof, leaving the occupants further protected by door and window frames, although there's already a rollbar. The available removable hardtop comes off in 3 pieces, like t-tops and a sunroof over the rear seat. It's a challenge to tune the radio by touch-screen in a bouncing jeep. even with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the wrangler has to work hard on two-lanes. But a lack of neck-snapping acceleration must be compared to what it had before. And if it weren't an aerodynamic brick, it wouldn't be a jeep. There are seven boxed crossmembers in the chassis adding strength but weight. The rubicon with 5-speed automatic weighs an anvil-like 4130 pounds. riding a rubicon in oregon's tillamook forest, we tackled a trail that looked impossible for a vehicle off the showroom floor. Later, another wrangler rubicon scarcely broke a sweat on rocky trails crossing peaks in washington's cascades. Running it hard, it averaged 18 mpg for us. All wranglers come standard with 4x4 and 6-speed manual transmission, with 5-speed automatic available. the freedom top, a three-piece modular hard top, is available for all models. The wrangler sport is available in right-hand drive for rural mail carriers. Removable doors, roll-up windows, black fender flares, halogen headlamps, foglamps, soft top, air conditioning, 60/40 split rear bench, 600 amp battery. wrangler unlimited sahara 30,745) adds body color fender flares, power heated mirrors, tubular side steps, remote keyless entry, power windows and door locks, sirius radio, upgraded sound system, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, 115-volt outlet, and 18-inch painted aluminum wheels. wrangler unlimited rubicon 33,570) comes with the same extra offroad equipment as the two-door rubicon, plus all the power equipment of the sahara. safety equipment on all models includes electronic stability control with roll mitigation, hill start assist, trailer sway control, all-speed traction control, abs with brake assist, frontal and side airbags. walkaroundthe 2012 wrangler looks like a jeep, and when that can't be said, it's time to worry. It may be the most recognizable vehicle in the world. Round headlamps, 7-slot grille, wheel flares, removable doors, bolt-on fenders, fold-down windshield. The hardtop is $735 option; it comes off in 3 pieces, like t-tops and a sunroof over the rear seat. We spent a summer day on jeep trails in the northwest in a wrangler rubicon with all three parts removed, and it was fabulous. The body-colored hardtop is new to the rubicon in 2012. The soft top remains the sportiest in appearance. Standard colors are available for those who want to blend into the environment, whether suburban or bucolic. interiorthe jeep wrangler interior was revised and dressed up for 2011. There are no significant changes inside for 2012. we lived in a hardtop wrangler for a week and it was all good, comfort-wise. Good rear legroom, easy to climb in and out. The rear 60/40 seat folds or can be removed to create 87 cubic feet of cargo space, comparable to a toyota 4runner. the pentastar engine block was designed to have accessories bolted to it, to reduce vibration. Unstoppable off road, livable on road. introductionfew vehicles are better off road than a jeep wrangler the wrangler is an icon and it can deliver inimitable fun. the wrangler was redesigned for the 2007 model year. It's much more comfortable and convenient, offering more cargo and back-seat passenger space. after its 2007 redesign, the wrangler gets only minor changes for 2008. It adds the sunrider top; yes essentials cloth upholstery; height-adjustable driver's seat; air conditioning; cruise control; fog lamps; 368-watt infinity sound system with six speakers and subwoofer; leather-wrapped steering wheel; tow hooks; fog lamps; compass; outside temperature indicator; body-colored fender flares; tubular side steps; heavy-duty suspension; tinted windows; and p255/70r18 goodyear wrangler all-terrain tires on aluminum wheels. options include many of the x options, plus options jeep's mygig multimedia infotainment system with 20-gigabyte hard drive and navigation system 1,275) and remote engine starting 185). the rubicon 27,220) is the model for serious off-roading. To the x model, the wrangler rubicon adds amenities such as air conditioning, leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, height-adjustable driver's seat, floormats, compass, outside temperature indicator, and a 368-watt infinity sound system with six speakers and subwoofer. Three skid plates protect the fuel tank, transfer case and automatic transmission oil pan. interiorwranglers have traditionally been known as cramped inside. The current jeep wrangler two-door is a lot roomier inside than pre-2007 models, thanks to its increased width. The comfortable high-back front seats, using a handsome stain-resistant gray or khaki-colored fabric in the sahara and rubicon, offer 5. 1 inches more shoulder room and 4. 6 inches more hip room than previous-generation models. The removable rear seat provides 3. 9 inches more shoulder room, 1. 6 inches more hip room and 1 inch more leg room for each of the two passengers. Jeep claims that's more cargo space than the toyota fj cruiser, hummer h3, or nissan xterra offer. The headrests flip back, so they don't need to be removed, making it easy to switch between cargo and back-seat passenger modes. That huge difference is because in the regular wrangler, the rear passengers sit directly over the axle and between the wheel wells; in the unlimited, the axle is located behind them. The instruments, including the optional compass and temperature gauges, are easy to read, and the controls are soothingly simple. The solid square buttons look good and are easy to understand and operate. The materials are made of sturdy plastic that works well in the utilitarian wrangler. the 368-watt infinity sound system comes with seven speakers, including a subwoofer. That's a lot of speakers for a jeep, but we think this is a good thing. It comes with sirius satellite radio, good for keeping up with the news when out in the boonies. Located under the sound system controls are big climate control knobs, with buttons for available power windows above that. jeep's mygig multimedia infotainment system comes with a 6. 5-inch touch screen, a 20-gigabyte hard drive and a navigation system with voice control and real-time traffic information. The hard drive holds songs, pictures and navigation map information. Cds can be ripped right to the hard drive, and songs and pictures can be transferred via a usb port. A gracenotes database sorts songs by artist, track and song title. The locking glove box is pretty big and there's a convenient grab handle above it. This is a jeep, after all, so the grab handle will be used in the bouncy bits. the modular freedom top for the unlimited features sections above each passenger that easily lift off after twisting a fastener. These sections can be stored behind the rear seat. The larger section over the rear sea.
